St. Patrick’s Day is next week, March 17, and I don’t want to miss out on a teaching opportunity. I am a homeschool mom, after all. 😉 But the thought of adding one more thing to the lesson plan can seem overwhelming, so what’s a mom to do?

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

Here’s a collection of ideas for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in our homeschool. Maybe this list will give you some ideas to incorporate into your St. Patrick’s Day…

1. Wear Green!

This is so super easy! Just throw on a green tee shirt, socks, or underwear even, and you are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The History Channel has several videos about St. Patrick’s Day, and here’s one about why we wear green.

2. Make Green Food

I guess you could use green food coloring to dye the milk in your kids’ cereal, but the “crunchy” part of me won’t allow it. We’ll enjoy some green eggs and maybe a health-ified Shamrock shake–both colored with spinach.

3. Learn About the Real St. Patrick

Did you know that St. Patrick was a Christian missionary to Ireland?  This History Channel video gives a quick overview and this video answers the question, “Who Was St. Patrick?”

Catholic Online has some quick fun facts you might want to share with your kids too.

4. Tell the Story of the Shamrock

Did you know that it is believed that St. Patrick used the shamrock (or clover) which grew abundantly all over Ireland to share the gospel? The usual 3 leaves represent the Trinity–God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Head outside and look for clover, or if the weather isn’t so great (as March can be temperamental here in MS), enjoy a shamrock coloring page. 5. Mini Unit Study

Incorporate a mini unit study like the free one offered over at Knowledge Quest. It can be good for your homeschool to sometimes diverge from your usual lessons. With most of the prep work already done for you, this study would be easy to incorporate. It’s designed to last from Monday to Friday and would probably take about 30 minutes a day to complete.

6. Notebooking Pages

NotebookingPages.com has a set of FREE St. Patrick’s Day notebooking pages. These are great for allowing your students to decide what they’d like to include about what they’ve learned. Older students could do the research on their own and use these pages for recording their findings. Youngers could use these for copywork. St. Patrick's Day in Your Homeschool Notebooking Pages

I hope you’ll incorporate at least one of these ideas into your lesson plans. If you’d like more, I have an entire board filled with ideas on Pinterest.
