My Favorite Frugal Resource

When I had the idea for this post, I thought I’d have a nice long list of resources to share. After all, I’ve been at this frugal livin’ thing for most of my married life.

I could tell you that one of my favorite frugal resources is thrift store shopping or that the library is a great resource for frugal (aka, usually free) entertainment or that learning to cook from scratch will save you TONS of money. All of those are great tips, but the truth is that I learned those and a thousand more tips from one book about 15 years ago.

The Complete Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn (pronounced decision) is hands-down my absolute favorite frugal resource. When it says complete, it means complete. No subject is left untouched, and the tips are practical and useful for everyone.

The book is a compilation of newsletters that Amy printed and distributed to subscribers from 1990 to 1996. It still holds a prominent place on my bookshelf, and I refer back to it on a regular basis for recipes, encouragement, and inspiration. The “Basic Muffin” recipe was a staple in my pantry until a few years ago when we learned that one of our children is gluten-intolerant. And the “Ten Painless Ways to Save $100” is a great reminder that little things add up. It is my #1 recommendation to all my “in-real-life” friends for making ends meet, so I am now recommending it you, my cyber friends. Check it out. And when I say ‘check it out’, I mean that. Seriously, it’s worth buying, but be frugal and check it out from your library first. You won’t be disappointed!

Have you read the book? What do you think about it? Do you have a favorite frugal resource that you share with all of your in-real-life friends? Share with us here in the comments.
