Pure Flix for Your Homeschool

We’ve recently discovered Pure Flix for our homeschool. Have you ever heard of it? I mean, I’m sure you know about YouTube and NetFlix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, right? Pure Flix is the faith-based alternative to all of these. Aside from their wide variety of Christian movies, they also has a whole section of educational videos that my kids are loving.

In fact, I chose one video from the Popular Mechanics Kids series to go along with our science lessons. When it was done, they were asking to keep watching more episodes, and it has been that way almost every day after school.

Why Use Videos?

There are three primary learning styles: auditory, visual, and tactile. I try to present information in a variety of ways to “speak to” all three learning styles since it is a fact that more learning is retained when multiple senses are used. Videos are attractive to both visual and auditory learners, so I am “killing two birds with one stone”.

Videos give mom’s voice a break. I love reading aloud to my kids, and I love teaching them, but I get tired of talking sometimes. Having a lesson taught or reinforced by someone on a video is nice every once in while. It’s also nice to be able to watch and listen and learn WITH my kids.

And having an “expert” back up what you’re teaching gives mom credibility. I know we don’t really need someone to do this, but I think it’s good for our kids to hear from someone else now and then.

Why Pure Flix?

So, I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust the internet. Innocent searches by a child can land them somewhere they never intended to go, seeing things they never intended to see. Commercials that are played during some online videos are often inappropriate. And we’ve even found content in some secular educational videos to be less-than-desirable for our kids. Pure Flix is a Christian company striving to be “the most trusted family-friendly video-streaming source on the web”.

They have a well-organized website with good, clean choices. Listed under Educational on the site, Pure Flix has the following Sub-Genres: Documentaries, Language, Geography, Animals, Science & Nature, Health & Fitness, Wars, Biographies, and History & Government. They’ve designed the site with families and homeschoolers in mind.

Pure Flix offers a free one-month subscription with affordable plans beginning at just $10.99/month or $99.99 annually. You can also sign up for a 4-week email series for homeschoolers that highlights educational videos in a variety of subjects.

FYI: These are not affiliate links. I’m simply sharing a homeschool tool that we’ve found beneficial.

So what about you? Have you tried Pure Flix? Do you use videos to expand your homeschool lessons? I’d love to hear from you!

  1. We love Pure Flix! We have just finished the Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible series. We used it to help with Bible. We find new stuff daily that we love.
